Exploring Colleyville Nature Center: A Birdwatcher’s Paradise and Urban Oasis
As a passionate birder and the curator of BirdsOfTexas.com, I always jump at the chance to explore Texas’s hidden natural treasures. Last week, I had an unforgettable visit to the Colleyville Nature Center in Colleyville, Texas—a true urban gem nestled amid the bustling Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. What made the experience even more special was receiving a grand tour from Janet Hix, a local expert whose passion for the area shines through in every step.

A Brief History of Colleyville Nature Center
The story of Colleyville Nature Center is intertwined with the broader history of Colleyville itself, a city that has evolved from humble rural roots into one of the region’s most affluent suburbs. Settlement in the area began in the 1850s, when pioneers like Samuel C.H. Witten arrived from Missouri and established farms along Little Bear Creek. Over the decades, small communities such as Pleasant Glade and Pleasant Run sprouted up, supported by churches, schools, and the arrival of the railroad in 1888, which boosted local commerce. The town was renamed Colleyville in 1914 in honor of Dr. Lilburn Howard Colley, a prominent physician and early settler who had moved there in 1880. By January 10, 1956, Colleyville was officially incorporated as a city, marking the start of its rapid growth from a sleepy rural outpost to a thriving community with a population that ballooned from around 1,500 in 1960 to over 11,000 by the late 1980s.
Amid this transformation, the Colleyville Nature Center emerged as a vital effort to preserve the area’s natural heritage. Spanning 46 acres of protected land, the center was established to safeguard woodlands, wetlands, and meadows while offering residents and visitors a space for recreation and education. It’s a place where nature is intentionally allowed to take its course, free from heavy human intervention, creating a serene refuge in an increasingly urban landscape. Over the years, the city has invested in developing over 3.5 miles of multi-use trails, picnic areas, and fishing spots, turning it into a beloved destination for outdoor enthusiasts. With nine ponds stocked for catch-and-release fishing and diverse habitats supporting birds, mammals, reptiles, and more, the center stands as a testament to Colleyville’s commitment to environmental stewardship.

The Grand Tour with Local Ambassador Janet Hix
My visit truly came alive thanks to Janet Hix, who graciously showed me around this beautiful spot. Janet lives right along one of the trails and has been taking daily walks here for over five years, building an unparalleled knowledge of the center’s flora, fauna, and hidden nooks. As we wandered the winding paths, she pointed out prime birdwatching spots, shared stories of seasonal migrations, and highlighted the subtle changes in the ecosystem she’s observed over time. Her enthusiasm is infectious—she’s not just a guide but a true ambassador for this urban oasis, encouraging everyone to appreciate and protect it.

I’ve known Janet virtually for years through the Birds of Texas Facebook group, where she is one of our most dedicated moderators. Her tireless work helps foster a vibrant, welcoming community of bird lovers across the state, and she is truly irreplaceable among our team of respected moderators. It was an absolute pleasure to finally meet her in person after years of online interactions, and experiencing her local hotspot through her expert eyes made the day unforgettable.
