Feathered Friends & Fresh Starts: My 2026 Birding Resolutions

Hey bird lovers, nature wanderers, and anyone who’s ever smiled at a cardinal on a snowy branch—2026 is calling, and it’s time to make some wings-flapping, heart-soaring resolutions!

Birding isn’t just a hobby; it’s therapy with feathers. It gets us outside, quiets the noise, and reminds us there’s magic in the everyday flutter. So instead of the usual “gym every day” promises (no judgment!), let’s set some joyful, achievable birding goals that actually stick—and maybe even turn into adventures.

Here are my top 2026 Birding Resolutions. Pick the ones that spark joy for you, tweak them, or add your own. Let’s make this the year we chase more birds and less stress! 🌿

  1. Submit a “Checklist a Day” (or at least 3–4 times a week) Inspired by eBird‘s big challenges—commit to logging even a quick 5-minute backyard count while sipping coffee. Watch your home list grow and feel like a citizen scientist hero. Bonus: those “sipping coffee” birds become old friends!
  2. Add 25 (or 10 or 100!) New Species to My Life List No pressure for a full Big Year—just chase a few new ones. Maybe a local warbler migration hotspot in spring, a shorebird beach in fall, or that one owl you’ve always wanted to hear. Every lifer feels like winning the lottery.
  3. Join or Lead One Bird Walk/Group Outing Per Month Meet fellow bird nerds! Audubon chapters, local birding groups, or apps like Meetup have tons of free or low-cost walks. Nothing beats learning birdsong from someone who knows it by heart—and you might make lifelong friends. I plan to organize some regional Birds of Texas sponsored meet-ups so stay tuned!
  4. Bird Naked (Tech-Free Days!) Once a month (or more if you’re brave), leave the Merlin app, camera, and binoculars at home. Rely on eyes, ears, and memory. It’s humbling, hilarious, and surprisingly freeing. Experienced birders especially—try it and rediscover the wonder!
  5. Make My Yard (or Balcony) a Bird Oasis Add a native plant, clean feeder, or small water feature. Track who shows up. It’s low-effort, high-reward joy—and you’re helping local birds survive.
  6. Capture & Share the Magic Snap one beautiful bird photo (or sketch, note, or voice memo) per outing and post it. Tag friends, use #Birding2026, or start a little “Bird of the Week” series. Spread the love and inspire others to look up!
  7. Celebrate the Tiny Wins Saw a new sparrow? High-five yourself. Heard a woodpecker drumming? Dance a little. Birding is about joy, not perfection. Celebrate every flutter.

Who’s ready to make 2026 the most bird-filled year yet? Drop your own resolution in the comments—I’d love to cheer you on! Let’s flock together and make some memories that fly. 🐦💙

Tag a birding buddy and let’s go chase some wings in 2026!
