At Birds of Texas, we are passionate about fostering a deep appreciation for the feathered wonders that grace our backyards, parks, and wild spaces. Our mission is to nurture a love for birds among people of all ages, from the rolling hills of Texas to every corner of the globe. We believe that when you grow to love these magnificent creatures, you’ll be inspired to protect them. As the saying goes, what you love, you will cherish and safeguard.
 

The Story of Birds of Texas

The journey began on December 3, 2012, when my dear friend Jim Hailey and I, Barry Noret, shared a vision over a heartfelt conversation. We dreamed of creating a welcoming online space where bird enthusiasts could share the beauty of Texas birds through photography. That vision became reality when Jim launched our Birds of Texas Facebook group. What started as a humble idea has soared beyond our wildest expectations, blossoming into one of the most vibrant birding communities online.  A team of dedicated volunteer admins, led by Laurie Lawler and Janet Hix, have kept that group thriving and inviting since inception. Today, our group boasts over 100,000 members, with an average of 200 breathtaking bird photos posted daily to it’s timeline.
 

In 2019, we took flight with the launch of Birdsoftexas.com, a dedicated platform to elevate our community beyond the Facebook group. This website was planned to become a digital sanctuary for bird lovers to connect, learn, and share their passion for avian life. However, it was sparsely used to conduct sales of an annual birding calendar. And unfortunately, the pandemic kept me occupied and growth was put on hibernation.
 

A New Chapter in 2025

Now, in 2025, I’m thrilled to share that I’ve retired from the corporate world, freeing up my time and energy to pour into my true passion: birds. With renewed dedication, I’m committed to making Birds of Texas the premier birding community in the world. Our newly redesigned website marks the beginning of an exciting new era, packed with features to inspire and engage bird lovers everywhere.
